Let me start by saying that Blogger is NOT my bestie. Yes, the price is right. Free is very attractive. However, it is awkward to use especially for someone who wants to put in a plethera of graphics. There is no word wrap or if there is, I haven't figured out how to use it. Take this as an explanation of why my pics may look awkward. I had a fun idea of how to scatter some pictures throughout the text but had to scrap that plan.
My big news is that I will be showing my art at the grand opening of Moss Rose Gallery in Cleveland, TN. The reception is February 10. Parking is easy so if you live around here, please come. There will be music and food and art. Also showing will be the owners Fred Wise and Jami Wise along with Jennie Kirkpatrick. We are all neighbors so I'm really looking forward to this.
The theme is about love but not necessrily romantic love so I thought of good friends and painted this piece which is 12 x12.
Obviously since I dissed this site, it is going to show me who's the boss. Now the graphics only appear as code as I write. I THINK they will show as pictures when I publish. I haven't used any code since the 1990s and I knew VERY little then. Now I realize that everything is appearing as one giant paragraph.

Then I decided why not make lots of besties so everyone could choose their own? So I painted a baker's dozen of 4x4's.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhCGgyIBjXw5QPPPy8kbzWJ3rYl9URW6qRs5_WWlosncb5M81PbfY_lMPaZ2Z2loOq0Yqv3uWwwmexKs5BQ9WEY62TlB80hQuPKgk0cj16klmNcNLK6VafGlfP7nGYgFOHkctf58pOetyLFNeOXI2VootQxmKoe1MjV7EyzUfM8jWto9qR1Pp7JbEEv=s2752" style="display: block; padding: 1em 0; text-align: center; "><img alt="" border="0" width="400" data-original-height="2224" data-original-width="2752" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhCGgyIBjXw5QPPPy8kbzWJ3rYl9URW6qRs5_WWlosncb5M81PbfY_lMPaZ2Z2loOq0Yqv3uWwwmexKs5BQ9WEY62TlB80hQuPKgk0cj16klmNcNLK6VafGlfP7nGYgFOHkctf58pOetyLFNeOXI2VootQxmKoe1MjV7EyzUfM8jWto9qR1Pp7JbEEv=s400"/></a></div>
They were such fun to do that I decided to make a few more with two people in them. I already painted this one which was inspired by Thelma and Louise.

Also thses Love Birds who appearing to be saying their vows will be in the show.

And finally I thought a Girl and Her Poodle would be great. That where I ran into serious trouble. I planned (a rarity), I made a mock up (that's a never occurance) and I ended up with a mess. Hope I can salvage it but I don't feel very optimistic at this point!

Unfortunately Covid 19 along with its two new variants are still with us. I have had my shots and wear my mask in hopes of staying well and/or not spreading any illness to others. However, I am beginning to wonder what the new normal will be--if we ever get to the point. I predict many precautions are here to stay and perhaps that's a good thing.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: Architects Daughter;">Meanwhile my studio has not seen much action. I've had plenty of time to paint but there has been a lack of enthusiasm which I hope to rev up for 2022. (Studio sounds much better than laundry room with paints and an easel which is more accurate.) </span></p><p><span style="font-family: Architects Daughter;"><span style="background-color: white; caret-color: rgb(84, 84, 84); white-space: pre-line;">CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) of Bradley & Polk Counties which is a non-profit that works alongside community volunteers to make sure the voices of abused and neglected children are heard in court asked for an art piece for their NYE auction. I feel much safer now that I have had my vaccinations and I have finally gone to the grocery story...twice! During this season of isolation, I have had plenty of time to paint but I haven't had inclination.. It appears that I am an extrovert and as such I get my energy from being around others. Every day I looked at the next and thought that I could start a new canvas then but the tomorrows came and went while my paints remained safely in their tubes. </span></span></p><p><span style="font-size: medium;"><span style="font-family: Architects Daughter;">I will be in an art show later in May--I don't have the details </span></span><span style="font-family: Architects Daughter; font-size: medium;">yet. Here is yesterday's intended post. It was interesting to read some interpretations on FaceBook. I had not thought about the people being sad but that was what several people said. During this pandemic and time of political upheaval, I understand their view and appreciate it. What do you think? </p><p>Oops I just realized that the photo is crooked. The green on the right is the wall. Sorry.</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdUoRbGTZHM20dgGjMNBvQOw5K3DUtoCKjClF0ECRTPz6Xww18nbE85dvFw5bEuPL3zBXYiSe8rGeQPzPWOxMbkLQQKpzwJE5QmTcVnZs5Ok2EfQ-t0KA1qL11t9CUV_yn7V5leALyFY0/s2048/IMG_2384.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdUoRbGTZHM20dgGjMNBvQOw5K3DUtoCKjClF0ECRTPz6Xww18nbE85dvFw5bEuPL3zBXYiSe8rGeQPzPWOxMbkLQQKpzwJE5QmTcVnZs5Ok2EfQ-t0KA1qL11t9CUV_yn7V5leALyFY0/s640/IMG_2384.jpeg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">We Were There</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Acrylic on Canvas 36x24</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Here is today's piece which is more non-objective. I even took some time with my Covid19 hair. You may wonder where I was going so I'll tell you. I had to get bloodwork done. Just regular bloodwork that is done every year, I'm not sick. However, it was an opportunity to leave the Bijou and I was happy.</p><p>I'm also happy that the following piece was accepted into the Fall Festival at the Creative Arts Guild in Dalton, GA.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioBde9j8HyRo8IcuuPFR8RW8alQjIPNGfivWHzAL42w65IOrT68b6rnyWTIKwxsuILjlB51_madR6SNUI68W3AsQMN2IeADLDXGxqG1mygCUngBRfrGF-0Ln_dCsOcXrmlBF-WiVvkQuI/s2048/IMG_1084.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1934" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioBde9j8HyRo8IcuuPFR8RW8alQjIPNGfivWHzAL42w65IOrT68b6rnyWTIKwxsuILjlB51_madR6SNUI68W3AsQMN2IeADLDXGxqG1mygCUngBRfrGF-0Ln_dCsOcXrmlBF-WiVvkQuI/s640/IMG_1084.JPG" /></a></div><p style="text-align: center;">Orange Vase</p><p style="text-align: center;">10x10 Acrylic on Canvas</p><p style="text-align: left;">email: vickistyons@me.com</p>Vicki Styonshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02844835543742794933noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8449036422287415223.post-59179955494034482122020-08-16T13:32:00.004-07:002020-08-17T09:15:32.152-07:00Gearing up for a new Show<p><span style="font-family: helvetica;">This can be better viewed in your browser.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: helvetica;">I sent six photos of six pieces I painted hoping for acceptance into an exhibit in Dalton, GA. After waiting an extraordinary long time, I got my acceptance. I have entered this show for the past 4 years and this is the first time all of my pieces were accepted. Yippee! Now I just hope that a patron or two like my work well enough to purchase one...or more.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: helvetica;">This particular show features the food from many restaurants in Dalton, GA and usually has a large crowd. Because of Covid-19, what is usually a well attended reception will be different this year but I do not know the plans as of yet. I only know that the art will also be sold online. More about that as I gain information.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: helvetica;">The show is not until next month so I haven't made a decision about attending yet. However, I'm giving an advance peek at my work here.</span></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIOjLqJqEo0gTsPbVl9LFZSplzWJpTKdiaSLhvEIXAv7auOwpHxAi6AI2UVC3K9MJVLvtw_narED31wLR3GCxj_LwS0lHh7DnJiU79bwyh4kWkxfCJgITHzsNihou-co-XHVvLeo3t07o/s2048/63AB7B55-B617-479A-8D11-57A082D8724A_1_201_a.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1587" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIOjLqJqEo0gTsPbVl9LFZSplzWJpTKdiaSLhvEIXAv7auOwpHxAi6AI2UVC3K9MJVLvtw_narED31wLR3GCxj_LwS0lHh7DnJiU79bwyh4kWkxfCJgITHzsNihou-co-XHVvLeo3t07o/s640/63AB7B55-B617-479A-8D11-57A082D8724A_1_201_a.jpeg" /></span></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;">This is a small piece called Posies in a Pot.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;">14x11 Mixed Media</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><br /></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;">I'm sure everyone is just as tired of this virus stifling our outings as I am but </span><span style="font-family: helvetica;">I hope everyone is staying safe and well during this pandemic. I was wrong.<br />
<br />
My plan was to use 2 sets of bifold doors to display my paintings. I wrestled them out of my shed with the help of my brother. They smelled musty and were dirty so I cleaned them and left them in the sun in with the very slim hope that they would smell better. While they were sunning, I dug around and found some appropriate paint for them. Of course, I waited a day too long and it started raining so they had to be brought inside to be painted. I set them up using the backs of folding chairs for sawhorses. Bit by bit, I got them painted, but it isn't a very good job. Meanwhile, the Toyota dealership called me.<br />
<br />
This, THIS is the time they want to put me in a COROLLA while they figure out what is wrong with the lift gate on my Highlander. Are you getting an idea of the problem? There was no way those doors were going to fit in the Corolla. I called my sister with the idea that she would help me and we could use her CRX. She was on her way out of town but was generous enough to leave me her car. Alas, the doors would not fit in it. My brother also went out of town for the day. So much for siblings!<br />
<br />
It was my niece, Katie, who came to my rescue with an enormous truck. She helped me get the doors to the museum and I got partially set up. I still have a bit of setting up to do tomorrow. Tonight I have to get my business cards, finish at least one painting, get the labels done and do a few touch-ups.<br />
<br />
I know it is difficult to tell what is what in this photo. The doors to the right are still empty as the Command Strips needed to cure. I know that my friend Jacky has already claimed three mouse traps so at least I'll sell those!<br />

It is on Sunday, December 3, 2017, at the 5 Points Museum in Cleveland, TN. I decided that even if nothing sells, it will be good experience. However, before I could even get my stuff together, a friend came to the Bijou for the first time and when she saw three of my mouse traps that I have finished, she announced that she wanted to buy them. That more than paid for my booth! <br />

A few things about art are difficult beyond actually making the art. Naming the piece is one of them. I don't remember how I decided on the name Sarita, but I believe someone suggested it to me and I went with it. It means princess, but rather than a princess, I always thought she looked like a co-ed from the early 60s. You know--pre-hippy. <br />
<br />
I hung the painting above a bright pink chair at the Bijou and Sarita looked very much at home there.<br />

Several weeks ago, I said I would give a demo at an art gallery in Athens, TN. I then decided against doing an actual demo and thought I would just tell about the steps using various pieces of art. When I arrived the director was dismayed that I wasn't planning to give the demo that she had advertised. Ever flexible, I kicked into high gear, scavenged their children's paint closet and I got my demo ready. In fact, all the participants got to make a small piece also. During my talk, I passed around papers I had painted and a few canvases. </div>

After I finished, the director asked if any of the things I had brought were for sale. Guess who I had taken? Sarita. I left the painting there for her to consider and found out today that she did, indeed, buy it. I will miss Sarita, but I'm happy she has found a new home.</div>

If you are wondering why I don't do a better job of placing the pictures in this blog, it is because they jump all over the place. Also when I edit, they are in one place but when I publish they may have moved. I may need to look for another site for my blog that is not so unpredictable. Please let me know if you have any suggestions. I like FREE sites! haha</div>

I am trying to be much more disciplined with my art. To that end, I'm working daily (well...almost daily) and I'm back to blogging.<br />
<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHffsXi875mw31rZU2UgLhP-JU4Axic6KNAoX7OmsKHELyR98UN8HloRw2WHSZyPeTpDnL_xPZXB-QgiPWlUIRKdD1PiMPWUCR9MB5AzyFT-hT9IoWOfbGJTPenCuoVgza_2H-8lkij-M/s1600/IMG_1587.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHffsXi875mw31rZU2UgLhP-JU4Axic6KNAoX7OmsKHELyR98UN8HloRw2WHSZyPeTpDnL_xPZXB-QgiPWlUIRKdD1PiMPWUCR9MB5AzyFT-hT9IoWOfbGJTPenCuoVgza_2H-8lkij-M/s320/IMG_1587.JPG" width="240" /></a><br />
LAST year when I started this girl, I had an entirely different idea for her. However, my direction shifted when my art group basically told me my idea was crazy and that the sticks I planned to use would not last. This is not complete but you get the idea.<div>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOiEJKHCWK0Wsf5BWT-jzR9s-XG9le3YrLnx1lpMb604Yko9wFB7RwCM9jK2kJRVFwXA8JRYE6MPuaqhaBkpLpWQ9t5bPgwZpqU1dCkSes826BD7SRKvoAyN7eCTHvYFr5BUhSslevvXM/s1600/IMG_4906.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><br /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOiEJKHCWK0Wsf5BWT-jzR9s-XG9le3YrLnx1lpMb604Yko9wFB7RwCM9jK2kJRVFwXA8JRYE6MPuaqhaBkpLpWQ9t5bPgwZpqU1dCkSes826BD7SRKvoAyN7eCTHvYFr5BUhSslevvXM/s1600/IMG_4906.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><br /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOiEJKHCWK0Wsf5BWT-jzR9s-XG9le3YrLnx1lpMb604Yko9wFB7RwCM9jK2kJRVFwXA8JRYE6MPuaqhaBkpLpWQ9t5bPgwZpqU1dCkSes826BD7SRKvoAyN7eCTHvYFr5BUhSslevvXM/s1600/IMG_4906.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"> </a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHYKVWMf21qZvP4b-zsI7ZuCLIfDoNWOtPdSQa-3-2heHHzamVFoUvdDFn7hADEw6k_gGg0TCu55MHt8y6fJ7IdZQUkCVYMp90U7cEDThxFV5qdqP0fKyqXgdxRfSguNodzn6rpzztx7Y/s1600/IMG_4906.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1258" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHYKVWMf21qZvP4b-zsI7ZuCLIfDoNWOtPdSQa-3-2heHHzamVFoUvdDFn7hADEw6k_gGg0TCu55MHt8y6fJ7IdZQUkCVYMp90U7cEDThxFV5qdqP0fKyqXgdxRfSguNodzn6rpzztx7Y/s320/IMG_4906.JPG" width="251" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So I took those sticks and built a neighborhood!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I call this piece Head of The House</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Someone recently mentioned to me that all my "girls" had blue or green eyes. At the time, I agreed but looking at this one now, I see she has dark eyes. I am thinking I may add some other color to her hair. What do you think?<br /><br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Calligraphy is beautiful but I'm just not that fancy. Hand Lettering is more my style. I signed up for a short workshop, bought the tracing paper, ordered the Tombow pens --both hard nib and soft, got the packet of letter designs, took the class following all the instructions AND it turns out that to learn how to hand letter, one has to practice, practice and practice. It may be quite a while before I become proficient but I'm working on it. If you're an investor and looking for an opportunity, might I suggest tracing paper? I am using it at an alarming rate.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

I had planned to make a headdress using twigs for this girl, but let me just tell you--my art group really panned that idea. They said the sticks would decay or be broken off the canvas or...whatever. So I am going to plan B and saving the twigs for a girl to put in the Bijou!<br />
<br />
Plan B is for a headband but it will fit her differently from what she now has, and I am hopeful that I can make her hair look right! Oh, yes, I am also planning on her having a nose. In fact, I think that next week she will look very different and much better.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjP8vlUr1PYOteglQ_gQDZxcSaWWvYmHyMwRdp2suzQ6n_xjuSxbA4FS_z7x4RuGc5Xv43DKXwoRaqVobe1k4qdVki6OKJoox10Urpt13Ii3VHvymgKy-oRVNpjeRJZ3Qe6fTjAquIJWb4/s1600/FullSizeRender+41.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjP8vlUr1PYOteglQ_gQDZxcSaWWvYmHyMwRdp2suzQ6n_xjuSxbA4FS_z7x4RuGc5Xv43DKXwoRaqVobe1k4qdVki6OKJoox10Urpt13Ii3VHvymgKy-oRVNpjeRJZ3Qe6fTjAquIJWb4/s400/FullSizeRender+41.jpg" width="326" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
You saw this last week, but it is just about finished now. The Cyrillic letters are actually painted on as are the Greek ones. The Greek word is not very obvious in this photo. It needs a bit of touch-up here and there, and then it will go to the MMIA jury.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXxtX3ksxqgV_sPZZydl-p_7_WlujrVy0UMXuSIm_Lkv-hRFUxBU9EKJIjRoM9Eyj6Ge3zgkiuTp2t7iPRHB4-nMJ4xlz4etk4K_AYWA7fxym3sLTSTY37ZIsh3c31NbWmu29py0K_q4c/s1600/FullSizeRender+42.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXxtX3ksxqgV_sPZZydl-p_7_WlujrVy0UMXuSIm_Lkv-hRFUxBU9EKJIjRoM9Eyj6Ge3zgkiuTp2t7iPRHB4-nMJ4xlz4etk4K_AYWA7fxym3sLTSTY37ZIsh3c31NbWmu29py0K_q4c/s400/FullSizeRender+42.jpg" width="396" /></a></div>
<br />
On a More Personal Note:<br />
Today is the one-year anniversary of my house break-in, and I was a bit hesitant to leave. When I went to the grocery store, I left my computer in the room with Brooklyn. I knew it would be safe there or we could follow the blood trail. I am a bit on edge because the chairs were stolen off my porch two weeks ago. Evidently, there is a target on the Bijou!<br />
<br />
I have less than two weeks to get my paintings ready for submission to a juried show. I can send 5 for jurying, and I really hope something will be accepted. Keep your fingers crossed for me!<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />Vicki Styonshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02844835543742794933noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8449036422287415223.post-46338081979638234152015-07-11T11:03:00.000-07:002015-07-11T11:03:27.168-07:00Uninvited Guest<div style="text-align: left;">
Because July 5 was oh so nice I decided to take Brooklyn with me on an errand. We were gone probably for about 20 to 30 minutes. Upon entering the house, I immediately noticed that my computer was missing and then I realized my iPad was also gone. Yikes! </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
First call was to my sister who thought I was joking but when she realized I was serious, she came right over and arrived shortly before the police. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGk23H0uuZpElor2qCqB9sXTGgCTNIqgdHJu1KxELGNHlQjF5P0kZePR02FvxKQTjOOdob4MnTx9hOUsMzc0o0Et8HWE8lR-Zt3_m1mApWjaQRzsdSjW9ABNJENlh_cLM0MZsYZQN0kpI/s1600/police+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGk23H0uuZpElor2qCqB9sXTGgCTNIqgdHJu1KxELGNHlQjF5P0kZePR02FvxKQTjOOdob4MnTx9hOUsMzc0o0Et8HWE8lR-Zt3_m1mApWjaQRzsdSjW9ABNJENlh_cLM0MZsYZQN0kpI/s320/police+1.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Now here is the thing, the Bijou was in a terrible mess and in dire need of cleaning. The dust on all my furniture made it easy to SEE the finger prints but more difficult to actually GET a finger print. Note to self: Keep house clean. This is my guest room where that white box on the dresser had been opened. No valuables there...only handkerchiefs. The police took the box hoping to get DNA. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Oh yeah. See the walls? They are not in a prep stage; they are meant to look distressed. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Nothing in this box either except for remote controls and pencils. Another dead end for my unexpected company.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
This dresser drawer didn't yield much either or if it did, I don't remember. I <i>may</i> have had some money there. Another note to self: Get this drawer cleaned out!</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
In case you are wondering, these drawers are not dirty as they may appear but I distressed them. The bottom two drawers are on my "to do" list. </div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Ok so what else was gone. Well as far as I can see they took my fingernail kit. REALLY? Note to police: look for perp with nice nails.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Also gone was a check I'd written for a whopping $11.51. More on this later.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
The following day I dug some change out of the bottom of my purse and walked over to my "shoe" bank, lifted my hand to drop in the money and....it was GONE!</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Have I ever mentioned that I love Cleveland? The policeman who was here Sunday stopped by on Thursday to tell me they had a guy in custody. Remember that $11.51 check? He had it but it had been altered. He was arrested on other charges but at that time had not been charged with the incident here. <br />
<br />
STAY TUNED!<br />

I know it is not an good photograph but perhaps you can get the idea. Much more work needs to be done. The bits of color on it are from deli paper that I designed along with some stamping. Oh and I altered some National Geographic pages using a cleaner. </div>

Part of this is raised and a grout type product was used to achieve the look of the hair. He (Fat Head) will have more color in his final appearance.<br />

While walking with Brooklyn, I saw these:<br />

<br />
These crepe myrtle blossoms were huge and hanging out over the sidewalk. Beautiful even after the rain had given them a beating.<br />

<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Speaking of rain. I thought this was an interesting way to divert the way to the gutter. If you look closely you can see there is also a drain under the rocks. </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>Walking the Dog</b></div>
<br />
<br />
Lately we have had lots of thundering, rain and wind with the result of cooler weather for the past several days. Another result was fallen branches and at least one home was lost. (see below)<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhgpTObSaFfuWdChECSBpTWgO78Gmhvr8fij4_UI5VaAXSG9XGvLPwPgiv6J_OD7RRk1LpOCwjErY5rSrU9koR38lNQOsqQwr_TuvmkNeOzPDJQxFKQohcdOWg0U401_bCIBqLWOd80VIw/s1600/IMG_1894.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhgpTObSaFfuWdChECSBpTWgO78Gmhvr8fij4_UI5VaAXSG9XGvLPwPgiv6J_OD7RRk1LpOCwjErY5rSrU9koR38lNQOsqQwr_TuvmkNeOzPDJQxFKQohcdOWg0U401_bCIBqLWOd80VIw/s400/IMG_1894.jpg" width="225" /></a>Holding Brooklyn's lease and taking a picture is not easy so I didn't get as many pictures as I would have like to. I am trying to develop a photographer's eye and obviously I have a long way to go. <br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEheEw85_c5SIEPTj9pg8u837eCAIWrI4uBbtmbvSgYR6vy8o2O-b3TxySlp57SY9E3TeORFeQePsFMbii4y2_iBFGqJg47TYR1iDXjfx6WxtyioIdFNpwrOtr6mc-32Od4HgxRlXfVeEso/s1600/IMG_1904.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEheEw85_c5SIEPTj9pg8u837eCAIWrI4uBbtmbvSgYR6vy8o2O-b3TxySlp57SY9E3TeORFeQePsFMbii4y2_iBFGqJg47TYR1iDXjfx6WxtyioIdFNpwrOtr6mc-32Od4HgxRlXfVeEso/s320/IMG_1904.jpg" width="240" /></a><br />

<br />
<br />
<br />
Another interesting sight was where this plant was growing. I looks like part of a crown on the house!<br />

After several problems this was our results. I think they probably should have been even more dramatic but something was off in the formula we were using. The last one turned out well; the first two were a bit weak but perhaps they could be used as an underpainting. <br />
<br />
I think this would work on some types of paper which would be what I was interested in but after seeing the process, it is pretty much off my agenda of something I want to try.<br />
<br />

These are small pieces of fabric. I have no idea how to do something larger. This is done in a vat of the mixture. The bathtub?<br />

<b>Safety</b></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Just a bit about Brooklyn. She is calm during a storm. She doesn't run around the house. She doesn't shake and quiver. She doesn't bark. But she does seek safety. The water closet is a good choice!<br />
<br />

One last item</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I've been working on a website for an art group of which I am a member. It is Mixed Media Inspired Artists or MMIA. There are some very talented people in this group and you may find a piece of art that speaks to you or you may just be interested in seeing the styles of art we make. <a href="http://mixedmediainspired.com/">mixedmediainspired.com</a></div>

I'd like to share those accomplishments with you. I'd love hearing back from you. If you have an idea how I could improve my work, please tell me. I also am trying to make some improvements around the Bijou. Trying is the key word!<br />
<br />
<span style="color: purple; font-size: large;">ART</span><br />
I'm in an art group with 14 wonderful women. There is much talent in the group and people are so generous with their help. The group is called MMIA( Mixed Media Inspired Artists). Please visit our website that was just published: <a href="http://mixedmediainspired.com/">mixedmediainspired.com</a><br />
<br />
I had done some painting and have two in progress. <br />
<br />
Here is one I finished. These colors screamed at me to use them. Of course, you may think these colors just scream! I've actually made some slight improvements to it since this photo was taken but the picture I have of it is on a disc and guess what? Yep, this computer does not accept discs. So I need to transfer it to a flash drive. Of course I'll have to use someone else's computer...<br />

Have you ever tried to get people to do work on your house? It is not easy. After having a huge unfinished patch in my ceiling for several months, I hope that next week someone is coming to fix it. I am planning to change the cabinetry in the kitchen by putting in drawers. The cabinet man came here oh about six weeks ago. About three weeks ago, he wanted to send someone to measure again. Last Wednesday, he said he'd either call me on Thursday or next Monday before that someone came here to measure. Please cross your fingers for Monday as it didn't happen on Thursday!<br />

Last semester kept me hopping but things may slow a bit now that I have only five residents to supervise. They are at two schools in Chattanooga which are fairly close to each other but Chattanooga is a lot farther than right in town as two of mine were last semester. It will give me an opportunity to check out a few things in Chattanooga.<br />
<br />
On the home front, my son and his wife distressed the walls in what is now my old world (of sorts) guest room. It isn't the look that everyone would want but I think it is fun.<br />

Those strange looking iron pieces next to the bed are going to be the headboard. They are rusted sides to an old school desk. First, I finally got a few things done at the Bijou but as Robert Frost said, "I have miles to go before I sleep." Well at least I have many things to do before I am near completion of my guest room.<br />
<br />
Does anyone else forget to take the BEFORE pics? This time I was fortunate to find one. My Uncle Harvey made this cedar chest but I am not sure when, perhaps when he was in high school which was before WWII. It needs repair but I didn't realize how much until I made it mine.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEju9R-nRCRjcwHijW9UJpmvUHO0ZO5XAyR-3FvWizOARM1Im3ReNC_MqhWnyywhcgki2jQ36ssuVHTLkPCFsBwFUuh8CIXjEqd1jO6O4tLcqrHpHCVSMqXErUf8jqgg4cipg6OqkMYH2EE/s1600/DSCN0797.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEju9R-nRCRjcwHijW9UJpmvUHO0ZO5XAyR-3FvWizOARM1Im3ReNC_MqhWnyywhcgki2jQ36ssuVHTLkPCFsBwFUuh8CIXjEqd1jO6O4tLcqrHpHCVSMqXErUf8jqgg4cipg6OqkMYH2EE/s640/DSCN0797.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
This picture of how it looked originally flatters it; the wood did not look nearly as good as this.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhX6HvQJDeA_jp17Ur35VSOFmo0QvXOv6ObnC_bXzXBFpCPkpcAuXa0I9khHebxR1iK-nGKQDTVshSsVVUSWkAlTLPNcDfR0TYPgLmp5ArJpzDli3gcRWMrbs_3vHiamU1Br24gIjYwNx4/s1600/DSCN0967.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhX6HvQJDeA_jp17Ur35VSOFmo0QvXOv6ObnC_bXzXBFpCPkpcAuXa0I9khHebxR1iK-nGKQDTVshSsVVUSWkAlTLPNcDfR0TYPgLmp5ArJpzDli3gcRWMrbs_3vHiamU1Br24gIjYwNx4/s640/DSCN0967.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
What can I say? I like paint! I painted it dark and then gave it a crackle finish.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimHK4eUkPmzf4aSPNodOZGF5XrIUlSxyCuEiXy-rDApHUrzx5rbY19-tlUMvd0i6-n2ekSWkwldF8RY5N4AditmywwtjvnLkQeDaDF7AEdbsNvioV2NEIFqcftRSYh8hOx6Ir1dd-M1-c/s1600/DSCN0970.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimHK4eUkPmzf4aSPNodOZGF5XrIUlSxyCuEiXy-rDApHUrzx5rbY19-tlUMvd0i6-n2ekSWkwldF8RY5N4AditmywwtjvnLkQeDaDF7AEdbsNvioV2NEIFqcftRSYh8hOx6Ir1dd-M1-c/s640/DSCN0970.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The bed is not finished but I am pretty pleased with it. It is difficult to find a queen bed that looks right with my old furniture so I asked Jenny, my niece, to built it and a few weeks later it was delivered. Now I need to paint. I could stain but I really like paint! Then I will put another surprise piece on it for the headboard. I have my fingers crossed that it will work.<br />
<br />
Oh, did you notice the curtains? I found the fabric but never could make myself sit down and sew them. Jenny to the rescue. Then the task became hanging them because I couldn't screw anything into the wall. Even the electric drill would stop short. In the end I decided that a backing was needed (we used a 1x6) and got someone with a nail gun to put them up. <br />
<br />

The Christmas cactus is blooming right on schedule!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
And now for the surprise. Actually I had two surprises. On St. Nicholas Day I found a borrowed shoe on my porch will with chocolate coins. You better bet, I'll be leaving my own shoe out next year!</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
A few days later I found this poinsettia on my porch. I have no idea who gave it to me, which is a bit disconcerting... But if you are reading this blog, I want you to know I appreciate it very much!</div>

Chilly Temps</h3>
Oh my but the temps have been up and down and right now they are down! Several days when it was a tad warmer, I decided to rake up some of the leaves in my drive way. Every trip to the car I was tracking leaves into the car or into the house.<br />
<br />
<h3>

Well who could blame her, in a week and a half, her mammogram revealed a tumor, so she had several tests and a biopsy. All that culminated in a lumpectomy. Two days after surgery we were on the road to catch up on the observations. Her students are spread all over southeast Tennessee or so it seemed. We traveled about 150 miles and visited student teachers and practicum students at eight schools! Whew! <br />
<br />
Once at the schools, we would divided and conquer with her seeing some students and me seeing the others. It worked out pretty well and I got to see some interesting schools. One school had 2 baby grand pianos: one in the lobby and another in a wide hall that I didn't understand the purpose. I have no idea why I didn't get photographs.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
However I did get some other very interesting photographs. The first school we visited was an intercity school with the smell of a chicken processing plant outside. Not every encouraging The school as old but what a surprise when we entered! There were four enormous photographs on the wall. I got Kay to stand beside my favorite.<br />
<br />
But across the lobby was a wonderful art installation or a different type. I wanted to wander inside this piece and absorb it but we had to skidaddle.<br />

The students of Whitwell Middle school collected <b>11 million</b> paper clips to commentate the victims of the holocaust. These paper clips are now housed in a museum that is in a train car that was used to take Jews to the camps. Around the exhibit are butterflies (see below for explanation). The box car is located in front of the school and it is a very sobering site but it is also a wonderful tribute to the students and community who worked together to make this a possibility.<br />

Below is information copied from the Whitwell Middle School webpage.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: Tahoma, Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 11px; line-height: 16px;">
In 1998 eighth grade students at Whitwell Middle School began an after-school study of the Holocaust. The goal of this study was to teach students the importance of respecting different cultures as well as understanding the effects of intolerance. As the study progressed, the sheer number of Jews who were exterminated by the Nazis overwhelmed the students. Six million was a number that the students could not remotely grasp. The students asked Sandra Roberts and David Smith if they could collect something to help them understand the enormity of this extermination. The teachers told the students to ask permission of principal, Linda M. Hooper. She gave the students permission to begin a collection, IF, they could find something to collect that would have meaning to the project. After some research on the Internet, the students decided to collect paper clips because they discovered that 1) Joseph Valler, a Norwegian Jew is credited as having invented the paper clip and 2) that Norwegians wore them on their lapels as a silent protest against Nazi occupation in WWII.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: Tahoma, Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 11px; line-height: 16px;">
Students began bringing in paper clips. They wrote letters to famous people asking for a paper clip. The students also asked people to share their reasons for sending a paper clip. To date over 30 million paperclips have been sent to Whitwell Middle School. In addition, the project has received 30 thousand + letters, documents, books, and artifacts. All of these have been counted and catalogued by students and are on display in the Children's Holocaust Memorial Research Room located at the school.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: Tahoma, Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 16px;">
<span style="font-size: 11px;">The paper clip collection has become a part of the "Children's Holocaust Memorial" created by the students, staff, and community of Whitwell Middle School. The Memorial contains 11 million paper clips housed in an authentic German transport car honoring the lives of all people murdered by the Nazis. And eleven million other paper clips are contained in a monument honoring the children of the Holocaust. </span><span style="color: red;">Orginally, eighteen (for chai-Hebrew for life) butterflies (the Christian symbol of renewal and the Children of Terezine) enhanced the grounds around the rail car. </span><span style="font-size: 11px;"> Over the years, visitors have left several more butterflies. The students, staff, and community of Whitwell Middle School have transformed the car from a death car into a symbol of renewed life honoring the lives of those murdered by the Nazis. For generations of Whitwell students, a paper clip will never again be just a paper clip. Instead, the paper clip is a reminder of the importance of perseverance, empathy, tolerance, and understanding.</span></div>

<div style="background-color: white; font-family: Tahoma, Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 11px; line-height: 16px;">
The Children's Holocaust Memorial consists of an authentic German rail car that was used to transport victims to concentration, labor, and death camps. The rail car houses eleven million paper clips, one for each victim of the Holocaust. A small park surrounds the car. Orginally there were eighteen butterflies some inlaid with stained glass and others free standing copper sculptures. Over the years visitors have left additional butterflies so the number grows daily. There is also a monument honoring the children lost in the Holocaust. The Holocaust Research Room houses over thirty thousand letters, a collection of Holocaust books, artifacts, and art.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: Tahoma, Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 11px; line-height: 16px;">
<strong>Facts and brief history of the rail car:</strong></div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: Tahoma, Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 11px; line-height: 16px;">
This rail car was built in 1917 and used for many purposes over the years. After being bought by a German state-owned company in the late 1970's, the car was used for intra-company transport and then abandoned. During World War II, the Third Reich used this car to transport prisoners to camps. The car was discovered after the war in Poland, near the town of Chelmno. It was used as a grain car after World War II. The grain holes in the floor and the ventilation hole in the roof were put in after the war. This historic rail car transported 80 to 150 prisoners at a time to the camps. </div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: Tahoma, Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 11px; line-height: 16px;">
The rail car at Whitwell Middle School was part of the "German Reichsbahn" and is one of the very last remaining "cattle cars" of the Nazi era. This car was located in a railroad museum in Robel, Germany. Peter Schroeder and Dagmar Schroeder Hildebrand (White House correspondents for German newspapers) purchased the car and donated it to Whitwell Middle School. This German rail car, numbered 011-993, was also used in the European film "Stalingrad" and in the U.S. film "Enemy at the Gate".</div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: Tahoma, Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 11px; line-height: 16px;">
<strong>How the car made it to Whitwell:</strong></div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: Tahoma, Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 11px; line-height: 16px;">
When the Schroeders purchased the car from the museum in Robel, they took on the daunting task of getting the car to Whitwell. After inspection by technicians of the German rail company, the car was declared "rollable" (maximum speed of 30 miles per hour). The German Armed Forces had the car sprayed and disinfected for foreign insects. The "Deutsche Bahn" had a decorative locomotive in front of the car and towed it under official designation "Special Train Holocaust Memorial". The car traveled 300 miles to the German port of Cuxhaven. </div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: Tahoma, Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 11px; line-height: 16px;">
By special arrangement with the German Armed Forces, the Memorial Car was placed on the chartered Norwegian freighter "MS Blue Sky" and was transported to the United States port of Baltimore. </div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: Tahoma, Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 11px; line-height: 16px;">
Upon arrival in the United States, the car had to be cleared through customs and the required inspections of the US Dept. of Agriculture. From Baltimore, the CSX Rail Company transported the car to Chattanooga, Tennessee via one of their flatbed rail cars because the wheel gage of the German car conflicted with American rails. Fletcher Trucking Company of Whitwell, Tennessee provided the transportation for the final leg of the trip from Chattanooga to Whitwell Middle School. </div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: Tahoma, Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 11px; line-height: 16px;">
B & B Crane Company donated the services of an operator along with a crane capable of lifting 600,000 pounds to set the car on the tracks at the Memorial site. The tracks, which the car sits on, were donated by CSX Railroad Company. These tracks were made in Tennessee in 1943. Members of the community beautified the area surrounding the car.</div>

I have going to attempt to make it look distressed without getting distressed about it. I have tried to talk Drew and/or Francis into painting it without success. So it is back to me. I have 2 paint colors and figured that I can use them in various degrees and mix them together for another or add some black for another shade. So now all I need to do is actually open the cans and get busy.<br />
<br />
Wednesday I dressed nicely as I had to go to two schools to make observations. I wore a black dress and boots, fixed my hair and even wore mascara. I thought I looked pretty good! On the way to the second school, I greeted a woman who was approaching the parking lot and we exchanged a few words and then I tripped as I stepped up on the sidewalk and down I went. The woman rushed over to me and helped me up and let me tell you at my age that was much appreciated. No injuries were sustained other than a skinned knee and a bit of bruised pride. After signing in, I went to the nurse for a bandage and she even looked up from her phone conversation long enough to compliment my purse! It was the one I got in Italy and looks quite professional. Okay, all was well. While walking down the hall, I saw two kindergarten boys as the danced out of the bathroom. They were so cute in their uniforms of khaki pants and polo shirts. They smiled and greeted me, then one of them did a double take and said, "Ohhhh, you look scary!" Out of the mouth of babes! <br />
<br />
More observations tomorrow. Hope I don't scare anyone!<br />

They are so adorable.<br />

And I ask you, what's not to love? My sister and I have some (vague) travel plans and wouldn't it be great not to have to pack, unpack, pack, unpack as we traveled? Keep your eye out for one that I could get!Vicki Styonshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02844835543742794933noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8449036422287415223.post-18418342683450653262013-11-01T07:55:00.001-07:002013-11-01T07:55:30.777-07:00Halloween in ClevelandHalloween comes to Cleveland in a big way and if you live close to the center of town, you'd better be ready to hand out LOTS of candy! My street doesn't have a sidewalk so I don't get many visitors. However I did have one horrible incident as my dog somehow burst out of the house and bit a small child. I haven't quite recovered from that yet and I'm sure Timothy hasn't either.<br />
<br />
Later I want down town where the streets are blocked off and there is a huge party with a band. Lots of people in costumes.<br />

SIL Kay and I had our pics taken with Tall Betsy who is a legend around here. The man to our side stood there so Tall Betsy wouldn't fall. This woman's face was on the cover of a book but it was partially obscured. She looked okay until I "improved" her nose! Now she looks as if Michael Jackson's plastic surgeon operated on her. Obviously she should opted for some chin surgery as it is very off center!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Made my first formal observations of two student teachers last week. My fingers were flying over the keyboard as I tried to record most of what was being said and done. My typing was a mess BUT it was a fair record of what occurred in the classroom and was wonderful to have as I conferenced with the students after the lesson. I am fortunate to have young women who are excited about teaching and want to improve.</div>
